Macunaíma

This was the most interesting film of the course in my opinion. While watching the film I kept thinking how much it looked like an old John Waters film (especially Desperate Living). The crude set ups like a grown man acting as a baby, pool of blood with bodies, and an eaten piece of leg answering its owner through the person that ate it, all give your stomach and brain a slight twist as you try understand what is going on while preparing to hold off the possible gag reflex. I wonder how much this was just a product of the time and how much was originated by the adapter. What were the repercussions that came from this film in the form of censorship? Is this film story/style still seen in modern filmmakers from Brazil or just a niche crowd?
