Joaquim Pedro de Andrade

Rio de Janeiro-born Joaquim Pedro de Andrade (1932-1988) directed the most popular film of Cinema Novo/Tropicalist era, Macunaíma (1969). Although he's best known for this film -- which was, anecdotally, re-titled "Jungle Freaks" by its American distributor, New Line, and released in a English-dubbed version --, Andrade had a productive career as a Brazilian filmmaker, completing six features and eight shorts before his untimely death at the age of 56 from lung cancer.

His entire filmography, which has been meticulously restored, will be shown next month at the Buenos Aires Festival of Independent Cinema (where I'll be present).
