An observation
In one of the opening shots of the movie, as the camera pans over in a theatre to the stage where the three gentlemen are discussing Santos' importance, they reveal a painting of Nosferatu. They did at one point mention Murnau in an anecdote later on in, but it did not seem to really have an importance to Santos, so I was wondering why they chose that image when it seems to have little or no relevance.

There are actually three movie posters on display in the theatre (I believe it's the lobby of the municipal opera house in Manaus): one, as you have pointed out, is NOSFERATU; the second, Dziga-Vertov's THE MAN WITH THE MOVIE CAMERA; and the third is of a crucial Brazilian new wave work, BLACK GOD, WHITE DEVIL (or as it's titled in Portuguese: DEUS E O DIABO NA TERRA DO SOL -- literally GOD AND THE DEVIL IN THE LAND OF THE SUN).
The reference to Murnau at the beginning, as told by an interviewee, is in an anecdote about Santos invoking the German director's spirit (remember Santos was a hardcore spiritualist who believed in omens, ghostly possessions, mysticism, etc...)
